Why I enjoy what I do

The main satisfaction I gain from my work is the aspect of problem solving. While it can sometimes be infuriating there is a real rush when a difficult problem is worked through. Keeping up with never boring ever changing hardware, software, trends and techniques is also rewarding as it keeps the mind active and I believe enhances neuroplasticity.

Isomorphic – A clarification

Rather tham I-So-Morphic, which to me is a bit meaningless, I am using this term in the mathematical context. Attempting to infer there is a synchronicity existing between what I do and a client’s business or service and that ultimately if a client is to succeed it means I do as well.

Background

My first real job after school was as a field junior for a marketing research firm, Yann Campbell Hoare Wheeler. One of my tasks was printing the questionaries on an old offset printer which I was told was troublesome and require constant monitoring. All it really needed was a good clean. Once I had the printer seamlessly churning out questionnaires I would hang out in the print room reading. The print room was next to the directors car park and they would often use that entrance which led to discussions on the book I happened to be reading. At first I was a bit apprehensive thinking they’d be expecting me to sweep the floors or perform some other menial task to fill the time but they were actually impressed by the fact that I not only read but happened to read works they’d read themselves.

After around a year in the print room I was promoted to research analyst which involved working through the data collected and putting together presentation slides using a ms-dos program, Harvard Graphics, probably the only package I have known inside out. Having noticed a marked improvement of the quality of the presentation material I was again promoted to Graphics Department head, a middle management position, and ended up having two full time assistants.

The 5 years I spent with YCHW proved a solid grounding for my career in front of a computer screen. While my computer and design skills were constantly improving I was also exposed to what worked and what didn’t in terms of marketing through the business itself. Additionally the atmosphere was scholarly and encouraging. The reference I was given from YCHW upon leaving to travel is according to some one of the best they have ever seen.
